How Wholesale Buying Service Pricing Works

What buying services actually charge, how LA Fashion Insider’s commission-only model works, and the questions to ask any service before you commit.

The three ways buying services charge

Wholesale fashion buying services price their work in one of three ways: straight commission on orders, a monthly retainer or membership fee, or a hybrid of the two. Few services in the LA Fashion District publish exact numbers, so knowing the models — and their trade-offs — is the fastest way to compare offers.

  1. Commission-only. The service earns a percentage of what you buy through it. No orders, no fee. Costs scale with your buying and drop to zero in slow months — but the rate itself matters, so ask what it is and what triggers it.
  2. Monthly retainer or membership. A flat fee for access to catalogs, curation, or buying support, whether or not you order. Predictable, and sometimes cheaper at very high steady volume — but you pay during quiet months too.
  3. Hybrid and a-la-carte. Commission on some services, flat rates for others (buying tours, private label), hourly for consulting. Flexible, but total cost is harder to predict — ask for a worked example at your volume.

How LA Fashion Insider’s pricing works

LA Fashion Insider is commission-only. Since 2008 the model has stayed the same: no signup fee, no monthly retainer, no annual contract, no fixed minimum budget — a commission on the orders you approve, with the rate tied to your annual order volume.

  1. Free intro call. You share your boutique’s style, customer, and budget. We quote the commission rate for your volume on that call — before you commit to anything.
  2. Rate tied to volume. The more you buy through us in a year, the lower your rate. It is agreed up front and does not change mid-season.
  3. Exclusive vendor discounts offset the fee. We leverage $150M+ in collective buying power across 500+ brands to negotiate exclusive vendor pricing you cannot get alone — discounts that can virtually wipe out the commission. Example: garments listed at $1,000 from a vendor on Faire or FashionGo, we buy directly for $900. Add a 10% commission ($90) and your total is $990 — you pay no more than buying it yourself, with a dedicated buyer, curation, negotiation, and logistics included.
  4. Consolidated shipping. Instead of paying separate freight from every vendor, we consolidate your orders across vendors into combined shipments — cutting your shipping costs on top of the negotiated garment pricing.
  5. Pay only when you buy. Scouting, daily curated galleries, the client portal, and territory protection are all covered by the commission. No orders in a quiet month means no fee that month.

Five pricing questions to ask any buying service

Whichever service you evaluate — we compare four of them side by side here — get clear answers to these before signing on:

  1. Is the full rate disclosed before I commit, or only after a sales process?
  2. What exactly triggers a fee — orders placed, orders shipped, or simply time passing?
  3. Do I pay anything in a month where I buy nothing?
  4. Are there minimum order commitments, and what happens if I miss them?
  5. What are the exit terms — can I leave without penalty if the fit is wrong?

Pricing FAQ

What do wholesale buying services typically charge?

Wholesale buying services charge in one of three ways: straight commission on what you buy, a monthly retainer or membership fee, or a hybrid of the two. Commission-only services cost nothing until you place orders; retainer services charge whether you buy or not. Most services in the LA Fashion District do not publish exact rates — confirm the full fee structure on an intro call before committing.

What does LA Fashion Insider charge?

LA Fashion Insider charges straight commission tied to your annual order volume — the more you buy through us in a year, the lower your rate. There are no signup fees, no monthly retainers, and no annual contracts. Your exact rate is quoted on a free intro call, before you commit to anything, and it does not change mid-season.

Why is the exact commission rate not published?

Because the rate depends on annual order volume, a single published number would be wrong for most boutiques — too high for large buyers, too low for small ones. The rate for your volume is quoted on the free intro call with no obligation. What is fixed and public: commission only, no retainers, no contracts, and no fee until you actually buy.

Are there setup fees, monthly minimums, or contracts?

No. LA Fashion Insider has no setup fee, no monthly retainer, no fixed minimum buying budget, and no annual contract. You pay commission only on orders you approve. If the service stops earning its keep, you can walk away without penalty — client retention relies on results, not lock-in.

Doesn't the commission make buying more expensive than going direct?

Usually not — LA Fashion Insider's exclusive vendor discounts can virtually wipe out the fee. For example: garments listed at $1,000 from a vendor on Faire or FashionGo, we typically buy directly for around $900 through our vendor relationships. With a 10% commission ($90), your total is $990 — about what you would have paid on your own, with scouting, curation, negotiation, and logistics included. Consolidated shipping across vendors lowers your freight costs further.

Is commission-only pricing better than a monthly retainer?

It depends on your buying pattern. Commission-only aligns the service's income with your orders — you pay nothing in slow months, and the service only earns when you buy. Retainers are predictable and can be cheaper for boutiques placing very large, steady orders. For seasonal or growing boutiques, commission-only usually carries less risk because there is no fee during quiet periods.
